Earlier this year, Apple had come under inquiry from four Democratic U.S. Senators who had sent letters to the company asking that they ban DUI checkpoint apps. It looks like Apple may have responded, as some language in the App Store Review Guidelines has been added.
The letters that were sent had requested that Apple remove apps that provide “a database of DUI [driving under the influence] checkpoints updated in real-time”. The Senators had considered the checkpoint apps “a matter of public concern.”
Section 22.8 of the App Store Review Guidelines now reads:
Apps which contain DUI checkpoints that are not published by law enforcement agencies, or encourage and enable drunk driving, will be rejected.
With that, some law enforcement agencies do publish where DUI checkpoints will be located ahead of time, so these notices have been declared exempt from the ban.
